Many homeowners will have already given their lawns the first mow of the year and are now considering other ways to make their grass the envy of their neighbors.

A luscious lawn can be the first thing that captures onlookers’ attention when admiring gardens.

Richard Whatton is the founder of the estate agency Miles Byron and has over 20 years of experience in giving new homeowners tips.

Speaking to The U.S. Sun, he shared the lawn care practices that he swears by.

SEASONAL SOLUTIONS

“Each season presents different challenges and opportunities for lawn care,” Whatton said.

“In spring, I recommend focusing on aerating, dethatching, and applying a balanced fertilizer.”

Aeration involves making small holes in the soil using a garden fork or manual spike aerator to allow beneficial nutrients, water, and air to reach the grassroots.

Dethatching is the process of removing thick thatch on the lawn, such as dead grass or mulched leaves that haven’t decomposed.

A balanced fertilizer has the same amount of each macronutrient, according to Gardening Know How.

A soil test can be useful in ensuring that it’s suitable for your lawn so you can avoid adding too much of an unnecessary nutrient.

“During summer, adjust watering practices to prevent heat stress and watch out for pests,” Whatton continued.

“Fall is ideal for overseeding, fertilizing with a potassium-rich mix, and controlling weeds.

“Winter care involves minimizing foot traffic and clearing debris to prevent fungal diseases.”

ORGANIZED OUTDOORS

Whatton said a maintenance schedule is necessary for lawns to remain healthy and vibrant year-round.

He said this should be unique to your lawn’s needs, taking into consideration mowing, watering, fertilizing, and aerating.

Regular weeding, either manually or with herbicides, can prevent weed proliferation.

“Mowing your lawn at the appropriate height, watering deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth, and fertilizing according to a schedule suitable for your grass type are just some basic steps to take to ensure your lawn is maintained properly,” he said.

“On top of this, core aeration and overseeding can help maintain a healthy lawn by reducing soil compaction and promoting new grass growth.”

“Regular soil testing can guide your fertilization efforts, while timely weed control and addressing any signs of disease promptly will help maintain a lush, green lawn throughout the year,” he added.

LIVELY LAWN

Patchy growth and weeds aren’t uncommon but require “proactive measures” to overcome, said Whatton.

“Regular weeding, either manually or with herbicides, can prevent weed proliferation,” he said.

“For patchy areas, identify the underlying cause, such as compacted soil or poor drainage, and address it before reseeding.

“Proper watering and mowing techniques can also result in a healthier, more uniform lawn.”
