As summer approaches, many homeowners are keen to transform their backyard into an inviting space for relaxing and socializing.

But placing waterproof seating and a grill outside isn’t the best way to make the most of the space.

Adam Oldfield is the director at UK-based retailer Stoves Are Us, which specializes in heating, cooking, and outdoor living.

Speaking to The U.S. Sun, he shared several ways to revamp a tired-looking backyard or patio.

OUTDOOR ROOMS

Oldfield said backyards are no different from interior design when it comes to zoning to make the most of space.

“Consider splitting your patio or backyard into distinct sitting, relaxing, and dining areas, making the most of patio furniture and accessories,” he said.

“Use boundaries like paving, outdoor rugs, pergolas, screens, and plants to divide your areas up.

“Think about where to position your patio furniture and consider not only where it will look best but also where it will be most functional.

“For example, place your relaxation areas towards the bottom of the garden, away from the house, where you’ll get the most peace and quiet.

“Likewise, cooking and dining areas are best closer to the house, with easy access to the kitchen.”

MAKE A STATEMENT

Oldfield said outdoor spaces should have a focal point as it “instantly transforms” the look of the entire space.

“A pergola or sunshade can provide the perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality, creating a sheltered spot for relaxing or dining under,” he said.

“Place one by your house for a seamless indoor/outdoor design or situate your canopy in the sunniest part of your garden.”

Adding a fire pit or stylish outdoor heater in the center of your space injects another layer of comfort into your garden design.

Walmart customers have highly rated a steel frame pergola priced at $172.99.

One reviewer gushed about its quality, while another said it was “easy” to set up.

According to the manufacturer, it is suitable for gardens, decks, patios, pools, and backyards.

It provides shade from “harsh UV rays and sudden rain showers.”

How to make your backyard a little paradise

Houna Bech is an interior designer and founder of the style blog With Houna.

She revealed to The U.S. Sun five tips for transforming a drab outdoor space into a “sensory-rich little paradise.”

  1. Embrace nature

“Use your landscaping, trees, flowers, and organic environment as your muse,” she said.

2. Bring the inside out

“Repeat color palettes, textures, and materials so the transition between indoors and out is seamless,” she said.

3. Create zones for specific purposes

“I might design a luxurious cabana with plush loungers and vanities for alfresco makeup sessions with my girlfriends,” she said.

4. Prioritize comfort

“I’m talking cloud-like sectionals, upholstered daybeds, and oversized weather-resistant poufs you can really envelop yourself in,” she said.

5. Get creative

“Finally, turn your entire outdoor area into an artistic installation,” Bech said.

SET THE MOOD

Oldfield recommends making gardens cozy with a feature that creates an inviting atmosphere and makes the space usable in all seasons.

“Adding a fire pit or stylish outdoor heater in the center of your space not only adds warmth and ambiance on cool evenings but also injects another layer of comfort into your garden design, making it a welcoming retreat year-round,” he said.

The advice comes after real estate professional Jim Gray told The U.S. Sun fire pits can be a “showstopping centerpiece” in any backyard.

He listed it among the features that can increase a home’s value.

“Syracuse winters won’t stop you from savoring cocoa by the fire pit, and summer heat won’t deter dinner parties under the pergola,” he said.
